State Tax Extension Filing

State Tax Extension Filing: While the IRS requires you to file Form 4868 to request a tax extension, each individual state has its own requirements for obtaining an extension to file your state tax return.

state-taxes-mapMost taxpayers that file a federal income tax return are also required to file a state income tax return as well. While the IRS requires tax filers  to file Form 4868 to request an extension of time to file your tax return, each state has its own requirements for obtaining a similar extension of time for state tax filing.

Some states like California offer automatic tax extensions to all taxpayers, while other states require you to file a specific state tax form by the original due date of the tax return deadline to receive an extension.

Step 1: Check with your state tax authority, see list of links below

Some states including Alabama, California, and Wisconsin offer automatic six-month extensions to file your state income tax return without having to file an additional tax extension form. Other states, like New York, will grant you a six-month extension, but you must request it by filing the proper extension form. For the nine states that do not impose a state income tax, you don’t have to file an income tax return, therefore there is no need to request an extension.

Arizona Iowa Nevada South Dakota
Arkansas Kansas New Hampshire Tennessee
California Kentucky New Jersey Texas

District of Columbia Massachusetts North Dakota Washington

Step 2: File the appropriate state tax extension form

Unlike the IRS Form 4868, which applies to all taxpayers throughout the country, you must file the correct individual state-specific tax extension form to obtain a tax extension in your state. You can either access your state tax authority’s website through the list above, or search for the state specific extension form online

Another option is to have your tax preparation software, such as TurboTax, automatically generate it for you.

TurboTax offers the TurboTax Easy Extension, an online tool that allows you to file a tax extensions for both your federal and state tax returns online through the TurboTax Website.

Step 3: Don’t Forget To Pay your taxes On Time

Like with your federal taxes, an extension of time to file your state income tax return is not an extension of time to pay any taxes you may still owe. If you still owe tax at the end of the year, you must pay them on time or you may be subjected to late-payment penalties and interest charges if you fail to pay them in full by the original due date of your tax return.

To avoid paying penalties, it’s always a good idea to calculate a quick estimate of what you might still owe to your state tax institution and submit a payment in full for that amount, if not a little more just to be sure. Even if you overpay to be safe, you can avoid possible penalties and claim a refund for any over payment amount in a few months when you get around to filing your state tax return.

Step 4: Submit your tax return no later than your extended deadline

In most cases with tax extensions, your state tax return will become due by October 15th, if you took advantage of a six-month extension. However, if you fail to file a completed tax return by this extended deadline date, your state tax authority may charge you penalties just for filing your state income tax return late.
