2018 Tax Filing Dates and Deadlines For 2017 IRS Federal Tax Returns

2018 Deadline Activity Timeline

  • January 1, 2018
    • Opening day for filing your 2017 tax return, though the IRS generally will not accept e-file and free file returns until the date listed below. In addition, paper returns won't be processed until later in the month
  • January 20, 2018
    • IRS E-file goes live, this allows taxpayers to submit electronic tax returns. Online services like TurboTax begin submitting previously prepared returns. Paper tax returns begin being processing on this date as well
  • January 31, 2018
    • You should have received your W-2 from your employer you worked for during the tax year. If not, contact their HR/Payroll department to request them to resend your tax documents
  • February 1, 2018
    • Deadline for 1099 statements (factors in your AGI income) that report non-employee compensation, bank interest, distributions from a retirement plan and dividends.
  • February 1, 2018
    • This is the deadline for self-employed individuals to file and pay their fourth-quarter estimated tax payment
  • February 16, 2018
    • Financial institutions are required to mail out 1099-B, 1099-S and 1099-MISC forms by this date. See what these tax forms are and if you should be receiving one for your return
  • March 15, 2018
    • S Corporation and Partnership tax returns due
  • April 17, 2018
    • *Tax Day* Get Your Taxes Submitted! it's the last day for filing federal income tax returns and extension requests. Since April 15th falls on a Saturday, the due date is shifted to Monday, April 17th.
  • April 17, 2018
    • Deadline for filing your state income tax return (for most states) as well as extension requests.
  • April 17, 2018
  • June 15, 2018
    • U.S. citizens or resident aliens that are living abroad are required to file their tax return and pay taxes owed by this date (or file an extension)
  • June 30, 2018
    • FBAR (Foreign Bank Account Report) forms are due for taxpayers with over $10,000 combined in foreign bank accounts during the prior year. Extensions are not allowed and forms must be filed electronically
  • October 15, 2018
    • Filing deadline for extension approved federal, state and S-Corp/Partnership tax returns
